3 Quick Tips on Developing a Money Saving Habit

We all know how important saving money is, but for some reason only a few of us manage to make it a habit. The best way of saving money is to do it a little at a time, daily, weekly and monthly.

Here are three quick tips to get you into the habit of saving money:

Tip 1  – Self-motivation

Having a nice savings fund is a good feeling. Saving money for short-term use is a good way of motivating yourself to save more for the longer term, as you’ll start seeing the rewards of your savings sooner. If you continue in this way you’ll end up with savings to use for a rainy day or to even start you own business.

Tip 2 – Cut back your expenses

It’s hard to get into the habit of saving if you spend more than you earn each month. Go through your expenses for the ones you can eliminate or spend less on. This could range from eating out less to reducing the amount of mobile data you use. Also look for cheaper alternatives among your grocery list items.

This can free up money to enable you to start saving regularly.

Tip 3 – Automatic saving transfers

If you set up a savings account as well as a current account, you can organise to have money automatically deducted from your salary and transferred to your savings account. This can be 10% or 20%, or however much you can afford to save. Start small with an amount with you are comfortable.

The two advantages of this are that your money will land in your savings account before you get a chance to spend it, and you’ll also earn the best interest on your savings as your funds accumulate over time.
